The White Sox rewarded their manager with a multi-year contract extension Friday, announcing the move hours before their annual fan convention opened. The terms were not disclosed. The extension comes after the White Sox dropped from second in the AL Central in Venturas first season to last with 99 losses in his second year. "You lose 99 games, there are going to be questions like that, about where this organizations headed and why they think the people in charge are the right people to get them through their end goal," general manager Rick Hahn said. "I would say we saw in 2012 and 2013 two extremes in terms of being a first-place club and being a club that was a disappointed in terms of performance. Throughout each of those extremes, Robins leadership was unwavering." Venturas contract was set to expire after this year. He turned down an extension before the 2013 season, leading to speculation that he might not want to stick around much longer, but he insisted that wasnt the case. He wanted to give Hahn -- then in his first season as GM -- a chance to work with him before making a long-term commitment. "I just felt it was important for Rick to have a full year of doing the job, us working together," Ventura said. "Then, you have the ability and freedom to decide if Im the right guy for the job. Nothing really changed in my mind of where I want to be and what I want to do. Its just more of it being his first time going through, I just wanted to make sure he had the ability and the freedom to do that. Now with the way last year went, the off-season, a lot of communication, a lot of talks of where were headed, how were going to do it -- Im excited to just keep going." Hahn, who got bumped up from assistant GM in October 2012 to replace the promoted Ken Williams, called it a selfless act by Ventura. "(It) allowed me the latitude to get comfortable," Hahn said. "It speaks to what kind of good man he is and actuallly makes a decision like this all the easier because of it.dddddddddddd" A former All-Star third baseman, Ventura had never managed at any level when he replaced Ozzie Guillen. And the results his first season were promising. The White Sox led the Central for much of 2012 before finishing second to Detroit with 85 wins, but there was a huge drop-off last year. Chicago wound up last in the division at 63-99, giving Ventura a 148-176 mark in two seasons. The White Sox hit just .249 as a team and their home run total dropped from third in the majors at 211 to 19th at 148. With little speed, there was no way to make up for the drop in power, and compounding the problem was the poor play on defence. They went from leading the majors in fielding percentage to ranking 29th, with Alexei Ramirez committing 22 errors and tying the Cubs Starlin Castro for the major league lead among shortstops. "Its imperative that we show improvement," Hahn said. "Its imperative that we show growth, especially on the position player side. We feel we have the ability to contend. But the most important thing for us is going to be allowing these young guys room to grow." Venturas steady hand, his ability to relate, came up over and over on Friday. Its why the White Sox believe he is the right manager, particularly on a team with some key young players. They signed Cuban slugger Jose Abreu to a six-year, $68 million contract, hoping he can add pop. Theyll have a full year with outfielder Avisail Garcia after acquiring him from Detroit in the midseason deal that sent Jake Peavy to Boston, too. Theyve added some youth, athleticism, to their lineup. They believe they have enough pitching to compete with Chris Sale leading thWETASKIWIN, Alberta – Andrew Ranger has plenty of mastery on road-courses. The two-time champion of the NASCAR Canadian Tire Series presented by Mobil 1 proved once again he can figure it out on an oval, too. He showed that Friday night as he picked up the win in the Alberta Has Energy 300 in the inaugural event at Edmonton International Raceway. Ranger tied the series all-time record with his 19th career win, and won back-to-back races for the first time since August 2009 following his victory on the road course at Circuit ICAR in Quebec last week. It was also his first oval win since 2009, and fourth overall. "At the beginning of the day we didnt have a really good car, so we improved lap after lap," Ranger said "During the race my car was really fantastic." The race was stretched to 316 laps around the quarter-mile bullring following a late caution that involved early race leader Alex Tagliani, and required Ranger, who took the lead on Lap 269, to hold off LP Dumoulin and Jason Hathaway on the final restart. "The pass with Alex [Tagliani] was a little bit tough because it was almost one [racing] line here," Ranger said. "He did a little mistake and I was able to take him in [Turn] 3." Dumoulin and Hathaway waged a battle throughout the last two laps of the race for second and Dumoulin came out ahead, followed by Hathaway, J.R. Fitzpatrick and D.J. Kennington. Joey McColm, Larry Jackson, Scott Steckly, rookie Stefan Rzadzinski and Noel Dowler completed the top 10. Fitzpatrick, Kennington and Steckly were all two laps down at different points during the race and rallied back for top-10 finishes. Tagliani, who won the pole position for the race earlier in the day, finished 13th. He led a career-high 268 laps. Fitzpatrick and Dumoulin are now tied for the season points lead after four races at 162 apiece while Rangers back-to-back wins have bumped him up to third, 12 tallies behind the co-leaders. Dumoulin has finished top-five in all four races this year, two more than any other driver. "Thats our first podium on an oval, and the guys have been working really hard," Dumoulin said after finishing second. "We were within sight for the last run. I knew being in second was not a good spot for the restart at the end, obviously we had to fight for that spot, but we kept our head up and made it happen." Ranger now shares the Canadian Tire Series career wins record with Kennington. That accomplishment came one week after he tied Fitzpatrick for the series all-time poles mark at 14. The race was slowed by 11 cautions for 94 laps, including two red flags. Theres a different type of confidence you get when you win games like this. The Chiefs (6-3) came out on top in a key midseason AFC showdown by improving to 6-1 in their past seven games. It was a different mood altogether in the Buffalos locker room after the Bills (5-4) unraveled coming out of their bye week off. McKelvin had difficulty containing his anger in issuing a series of profanity-laced answers in discussing how his fumble helped cost Buffalo the game.I take this ... to heart, McKelvin said. I fumbled the ball. It hurt us. But we still had a chance to come back and win the game. (Stuff) happens in the game. But youve still got to overcome it.The outcome turned early in the fourth quarter with Buffalo clinging to a 13-10 lead. The Bills defence forced a three-and-out, forcing the Chiefs to punt out of their own end zone.McKelvin fielded Dustin Colquitts punt cleanly at his own 31 and took a few steps to his right. Thats when he was initially hit by Albert Wilson. Anthony Sherman then knocked the ball loose, and recovered the fumble at the Bills 26.Two plays later, Smith faked a handoff to the right to Charles, and then took off left for the go-ahead score with nearly nine minutes left.Theres going to be games like this where everything is not pretty and you have to play through it, and theres a certain toughness that it takes, Chiefs coach Andy Reid said. And our guys showed that today. The Chiefs defence showed that in ending any chances of Buffalo manufacturing a comeback after McKelvins 23-yard punt return gave the Bills the ball at Kansas Citys 25 with 4:35 remaining. The drive stalled at the 15, when Kyle Orton thrrew four consecutive incompletions, including an underthrown attempt to Sammy Watkins at the 1 on fourth down.dddddddddddd Defensive back Ron Parker knocked down three Orton attempts, while another sailed through the end zone past Chris Hogan.Orton went 29 of 48 for 259 yards, including a 25-yard touchdown to Hogan. Marcell Dareus had three of Buffalos six sacks.Very little went right for the Bills offence after Orton hit Hogan for a 25-yard touchdown to cap the opening drive. Buffalo then managed two field goals, lost a fumble and turned the ball over on downs in four trips inside the Chiefs 20.The lost fumble was crucial in opening the second half. Running back Bryce Brown was three steps from the end zone when he had the ball punched out of his hands by Parker. The ball bounced into the end zone, where tight end Scott Chandler had it go off his fingers and out for a touchback. Its disappointing, its frustrating, all those words, Chandler said. I dont know what to say about it. Weve got to be better.Things dont get any easier for the Bills, who had a two-game win streak snapped and fell to 2-4 against conference rivals. They face a key test in a short week — at division rival Miami on Thursday night. This marked the fourth time during their playoff drought the Bills lost after compiling a 5-3 record. Buffalo hasnt had six or more wins through nine games since 1999, the last time it made the playoffs. The Chiefs, who opened last season at 9-0, find themselves on another roll and in the thick of a jumbled AFC playoff race. Its just crazy how the NFL is going this year, offensive tackle Eric Fisher said. It was a huge AFC game for us. Getting that win, being 6-3, that sounds pretty good.Charles finished with 98 yards rushing, Smith went 17 of 29 for 177 yards and Dwayne Bowe had eight catches for 93 years.NOTES: Chiefs RB Cyrus Gray sustained a torn knee ligament.
